When you are vigilant you are very watchful and careful so that you can see any signs of danger. You are vigilant if you are very watchful so that you notice anything dangerous. Security guards, soldiers in times of war and police must always be vigilant. That is, they must be watchful enough to see nothing dangerous happens, or no enemy enters.
