The college has one of the largest per capita populations of international students of any comprehensive college in the state system. These students ranked SUNY Plattsburgh first worldwide for friendliness and first in the country for satisfaction with the learning environment, according to a recent International Student Barometer. The college has earned many national distinctions based on its quality and affordability, including Kiplinger's and Washington Monthly. The nearby W. H. Miner Institute offers students access to 8,600 acres of forests and agricultural land as a laboratory. Other students study invasive species, the effects of fishing tournaments and toxic algae blooms through our Lake Champlain Research Institute. Expeditionary studies students access the landscape to learn advanced rock and ice climbing; back-country skiing; and sea kayaking skills, combined with history, leadership, land management, ethics and education. The college's proximity to Canada delivers a strong international business and global supply chain management program. Plattsburgh was the first college in the SUNY system to offer this and an entrepreneurship major. In addition, the college holds what is likely the world's largest collection of Maya skeletons. Combined with a DNA sequencer, these allow for unique opportunities to study the past. Dr. Nancy Elwess, winner of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, has been working with undergraduates on this and more, garnering national and international awards for this work. Communications students are also winning national awards from the National Broadcasting Society. Students in the human services are able to take part in unique experiences through the colleges Spectrum clinics, applying classroom learning to a clinical setting, doing research in speech, hearing, Alzheimer's, traumatic brain injury and autism. Our teacher education program emphasizes inquiry-based teaching and gets students into area schools beginning with their first education class. Meanwhile, the Plattsburgh State Art Museum houses more than 4,600 works. Through its Museum Without Walls, it offers students and the community a chance to see art without having to go into a gallery.
