The University of Portland is a Catholic university founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1901. For more than a century, the University had been dedicated to creating a campus community where teachable moments in and out of the classroom are not only prized, but spark lifelong learning. Students learn to think critically, communicate effectively, and respond ethically, so that they can become forward-thinking leaders in any field. Students are prepared not just for a career, but for a life. Located on a beautiful, 150-acre campus seven miles from downtown Portland, Oregon, the University of Portland offers premiere undergraduate and graduate degrees in its Schools of Business, Education, Engineering, and Nursing and its College of Arts and Sciences, with over 40 programs of study for undergraduates. Small class sizes make it easy to ask questions and develop personal connections with professors. There are seven pre-professional programs, including pre-law and pre-medicine, and 18 graduate programs, including advanced degrees in bio-medical engineering, finance, non-profit management, nursing, education, pastoral ministry, and more. The University is ranked third nationally for producing Fulbright U.S. Program scholars among peer institutions, with 59 recipients since 2001, along with seven student finalists for 2017. The University was also ranked 20th nationally among peer institutions in producing Peace Corps volunteers. University students have earned Marshall, Mitchell, and Goldwater fellowships, and faculty have been recognized with awards from the Carnegie Foundation, among them the U.S. Professor of the Year and three Oregon Professor of the Year honors. Over 30% of students take advantage of 16 study abroad opportunities offered in Asia, Australia, Ecuador, and throughout Europe. The University is recognized for its undergraduate research opportunities; its award-winning cross-disciplinary entrepreneurship program; and its focus on interdisciplinary STEM studies. The University offers an academic resource center, which offers peer tutoring and advising and other programs, and an innovation center for students to think creatively. There are digital and computer labs and study rooms available in the Library, and the Career Center helps prepare students by connecting them to work-integrated learning experiences and internships. In 2016, 84% of the senior class took advantage of such opportunities. Other programs include Army and Air Force ROTC and an Honors Program. On a campus with 3,700 undergraduate students, it's easy to make friends, especially when 2,200 students, including most freshmen and sophomores, live on campus in one of ten residence halls. The University's smaller size also makes it easy to get involved - with over 95 student-run clubs, concerts, movies, intermural and club sports, and 16 NCAA Division I varsity team sports, including nationally recognized soccer and track and field programs. Four of the University's coaches were recognized as Coach of the Year by the West Coast Conference. For on campus fun, the new Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center draws students seven days a week and the Pilot House offers pub-style food, big screen TVs, and late night programming. Just minutes from campus is Portland's thriving downtown, which is home to food carts and cafes, start-ups and world renowned companies, and miles of biking and hiking trails. Oregon's coast and Mt. Hood are also just a short drive away. For 22 consecutive years, the University of Portland has been a ranked a top ten university in the West by U.S. News & World Report; as the top private university in Oregon for value by Kiplinger's Personal Finance for the past seven years; and first in Oregon for alumni earnings by BusinessInsider.com.
