ascendancy (noun) a position of power and influence to control others.

When a person's position gives them the power to control others, they are in ascendancy. A person may be in their political ascendancy when they are in a position to influence the politics they are involved in. The US's ascendancy in the world is unchallenged. That is, the US is in a position to influence and control international affairs, be it in politics or in trade. (Astrology) When astrologers say that a person's star is in ascendancy, what they mean is that the person's planetary position favors his control over others.

  • The ascendancy of the USSR in world politics came to an end with President Gorbachev's anti communist policies of Perestroika and Glasnost.
  • In his attempt to gain ascendancy over the whole world, Alexander the Great launched his campaign for world supremacy, which ended with his conquest of Asia Minor.
